The American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS) and the Hand Surgery Endowment (HSE) established the International Reverse Fellowship program in 2017. The program sponsors an international hand surgeon’s visits with AAHS member surgeons at their institutions with the aim to provide expert, hands-on experience so that the Fellow may return to his or her host country and better local care while also educating others in learned techniques to perpetuate the improvement of global hand care.

During my tenure as an International reverse Fellow i worked with various Hand Surgeons in USA:

  • OrthoCarolina Hand, North Carolina (Glenn GASTON MD)
  • Children's Hospital, Houston Texas (Christopher William PEDERSON MD).

  • Conduct orthopedic and Hand surgery procedures to repair or reconstruct orthopedic and hand injuries and conditions

  • Collaborate with other medical professionals including physical therapists and nurses, to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

The Loloma Foundation’s mission is to provide sustainable medical, dental and infrastructure support to rural communities in the South Pacific who would otherwise have no access to basic healthcare.
The Loloma Foundation is a California-based 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, established in 2001. The board members consist of six medical, dental and business professionals who share a common goal of improving the lives and health of the people of the South Pacific.


I traveled annually to Taveuni and Savusavu district hospitals, Fiji Islands, volunteering as a Hands/Plastics surgery team member and trainee, Loloma Foundation Medical Missions.

Orthopedic Registrar in Training

CLINICAL

  • Provides orthopaedic inpatient and outpatient care in National Referral Hospital in accordance with departmental needs and objectives including procedures and operations according to credentialing and scope of practice.
  • Provides clinical oversight, support and advice to medical practitioners in regard to orthopaedic patients.
  • Ensures patient medical records are kept according to health service protocols and professional standards.
  • Ensures discharge summaries and medical reports on inpatients that have been under their care are prepared promptly.

EDUCATION

  • Promotes the development of training in medicine in country health.
  • This would entail the direct supervision of medical students and residential medical officer trainees in orthopaedics, as well as assisting gaining vocational training positions in orthopaedics.

General Surgery Registrar - Training

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for the day to day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the allocated site/facility. Provide after-hours emergency as determined by the relevant work unit.


Duties:

  • Admission and care of patients and liaison with Specialist Medical Staff regarding patients.
  • Attend Specialist ward rounds and record all decisions made in the medical history. Timely response to calls by members of the patient’s care team.
  • Ensure that consultations occur when requested.
  • Interact with families or carers of patients. Accurate and timely recording of drugs and treatment.
  • Undertake procedures as required.
  • Accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous recording in the medical record including progress notes each day.
  • Discharge planning. Provide Discharge Summary compliant with policy (or the appropriate standards) to ensure safe clinical handover to community-based care providers.
  • Provide after-hours cover as directed and short-term relief in other areas as required by the employer.
  • Involvement in Quality Assurance activities. Involvement in educational activities or evidence of further self-directed learning as per registration requirements.
